Seaside Rentals
If you live anywhere near the NW Oregon Coast, you know that it is quickly becoming one of the top sought after places to live in the Pacific Northwest – specifically the Seaside and Astoria areas. While this is no surprise to those of us that are lucky enough to live here already, it is still shocking to see just how fast our small communities are growing. With the surge of newcomers comes a housing shortage across the county. Homelessness rates are rising, and more housing is going up faster than ever while developers try to cash in on the population influx, and simply try to get enough housing available for those already here, and those that are still to come. While you’ll find no shortage of beach houses and vacation homes, local real estate is coming in short on rentals in the area.
County Wide Shortage
Seaside is undeniably one of the most popular vacation destinations in the state of Oregon. In addition to the vast nature that surrounds it, it is centrally located just 90-minutes away from downtown Portland and located within a 20-minute drive to other popular cities like Astoria, Cannon Beach, and Lincoln City. These are just a couple of the things that make the area such a popular location for those looking to relocate. With plenty of job opportunity, a big craft beer/brewery scene, and an all-around great community, it is not hard to see why Clatsop County is growing more rapidly than ever. Unfortunately, the number of rental properties (aside from some newly developed apartments) is not growing along with our population. Apartments and houses, studio apartments, and other home types are some of the most sought after rentals in the area.
While some may argue, the only downside we see to our growth is the overall lack of affordable housing and housing in general. As mentioned before, developers are quickly securing land and constructing new complexes, but there simply isn’t enough to go around for the time being. While our local real estate market is booming, median house prices are at an all-time high. Places, or land for sale, are being listed and sold within a matter of days or weeks, and not everyone can afford the hefty price tag, and high mortgage rates that come with purchasing. That is why having more rentals available in the area is an important piece of our growth as a community. At this rate, even relocating to a nearby city doesn’t guarantee your chances of finding a place.
Finding a Rental
While coming by places to rent in the area is becoming more scarce, that does not mean it is impossible. Knowing local property managers, or those with investment properties surely helps, it is simply not enough to secure housing in this competitive market.
